American Eskimo Dog

The strikingly beautiful American Eskimo Dog can be quickly identified by their white, fluffy coats and their piercing black eyes. The breed is often referred to as “dog beautiful” because of how great-looking they are. Besides their beauty, these dogs have big personalities and they are a lot more than just your average companion dog.

The origin of the American Eskimo Dog is not entirely clear. They are members of the Spitz family, and as such, it is believed that they descended from the white coated German Spitz. This theory is enforced by the fact that these dogs were originally mainly found within German immigrant communities in the United States. This breed is considered to be one of the most intelligent dogs, and as such, they became very well know in the 19th century as circus performers. The “Eskie” was able to perform all kinds of entertaining tricks, and they excel in obedience competitions until this day.

This breed comes in three different sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The weight variation between the 3 types is roughly 10-30 pounds. The Eskie is an extremely friendly dog toward family and friends, however, they tend to be slightly more reserved toward strangers. In one sense this is a positive because your Eskie will make a great watchdog, but at the same time, it is not pleasant if your pup is barking at everyone passing by. It is important to train them in a way that allows them to find a balance. In General, you can expect your Eskie to be very vocal.

While these pups are excellent at learning new tricks, their high intelligence makes them very independent thinkers. Their high energy requires them to have daily exercise, and their intelligent minds need daily exercise too. It is a great idea to play games with your Eskie that will make them think outside the box. The American Eskimo Dog is a notorious chewer, especially when they become bored. Be sure to have plenty of chew toys around, unless of course, you don’t mind them snacking on your living room couch.
