Australian Shepherd

One of the most versatile dog breeds that exist today. The high energy and working mentality of the Australian Shepherd allow them to excel in competitive dog sports, police-related work and even thrive as guidance dogs.

Despite the Aussie’s name, this breed originated in the United States in the 1840s. These dogs were bred to herd cattle, and they thrived at it. Today these pups serve primarily as companions, but this doesn't mean that they've lost their love to herd. You will see their instincts come out whether it be chasing animals, chasing cars, or even sometimes nudging your kids around the house!

The Aussie typically weighs between 40-65 pounds. Their medium size and high intelligence place them among the best working dogs. These pups need to release their energy at some point in the day and that does not mean taking them on a casual walk around the block. They need to be exerted both mentally and physically for them to remain calm and good-natured. If you leave this dog unoccupied for too long, you will witness some seriously destructive behavior.

As long as your Australian Shepherd is kept busy, they make unbelievable companions. They are very loving and highly loyal to their families. Their loyalty and protectiveness often result in them being wary of strangers, but they eventually come around to new visitors with the help of some good ol’ belly rubs!
