Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, or “Stumpy”, is a loyal dog that is jam-packed with energy. This dog was bred for farm-related work and is more than capable of working an entire day without breaking a sweat. Given their high energy levels, these dogs are typically more suitable for families with large open yards. If you decide to bring a Stumpy home to your apartment, make sure to give them tons of exercise daily, otherwise, you may very well see their destructive side come out.

The Stumpy is considered by many to be the oldest domesticated dog that is native to Australia. In the 18th century, the British arrived in Australia with their Sheepdogs, but they were simply unable to work in the Australian heat. As a result, these sheepdogs were crossbred with the native Australian Dingos in order to create a herding dog with a more protective coat. The Stumpys are excellent farm dogs, as they are very hardworking and enjoy having a job to do. Their work ethic translated to the Stumpys of today enjoying training and consistent mental stimulation.

The Stumpy is closely related to the Australian Cattle Dog. The differentiation between the two breeds is that the Stumpy has a short, sometimes inexistent, tail, a leaner physique, and is more alert when it comes to unfamiliar faces approaching their territory. Typically weighing 35-50 pounds, the Stumpy will be on constant alert and will always be prepared to protect. They are not very affectionate animals and do not especially love to cuddle, as they prefer to show their love by protecting their family members.

The purebred Australian Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog is a rare breed, and not many will have the opportunity to see one in person. They make a great family dog for active families that are prepared to dedicate a lot of time toward training their pup. An unruly Stumpy can be very difficult to manage, so make sure that you have the time and resources to take care of this doggo before bringing one home.
